The other day, I visited my friend. His son Ajay had passed JEE examination with a good ranking. We were discussing various options to enrol for. Ajay was quite abreast with the latest trends. I was impressed with his general awareness. I asked Ajay, “What is his life goal? What did he want to achieve?” He said he had not yet thought about it. He just wanted to pass with good grades and join a private company.
While driving back, I was trying to recollect my good old days. Did anyone ask me this question when I was eighteen? Had someone asked me, what would have been my answer? I confess I had no clue at all about my life goals. I was completely blank. To be very frank, I was nowhere close to Ajay.
Life goals vary significantly from person to person. However, it is imperative to define your goals explicitly and try your best to achieve them. You must have some goals to achieve, some objectives to live, and something to look forward to. Else life will become meaningless, monotonous, and miserable. Have you identified your life goals? Not yet? Then this is the best opportunity for you to make a head start.
The first thing to do is to figure out your passion. It is the most difficult aspect of life. Keep exploring the answers to the questions like, what do you love to do? What brings happiness to you? If you can identify your passion, your life will be filled with joy and happiness. However, if you cannot, then don’t fret unnecessarily. This will take time. It is almost like receiving a divine blessing. So, you must continue waiting patiently. One day you will definitely receive the calling. And then you would have arrived.
Meanwhile, prepare a list of goals that you want to achieve. Divide this list into short-term and long-term goals. Identify as many goals as possible. Let your imagination, and creativity flow unhindered. Enjoy doing this, have fun. Prioritize the short-term goals and start executing them by focusing on one goal at a time. While doing this, continue preparing for your long-term ambitions. Utilize this time for developing the necessary skills, finances, and mental strength. Do not allow yourself to deviate from the focus. This reminds me of a good book “Deep Work …” by Cal Newport. Please take out some time and read. I assure you, it will be a rewarding experience.
Remember, these goals are set by you. You are the owner. So, it becomes your responsibility to attain them. And believe me, you don’t need to be extremely intelligent or blessed to achieve these. What you need are a few essential virtues like honesty, hard work, discipline, determination, a positive mindset, and a little bit of luck. These are critical qualities to succeed. Without these virtues, as such, you will reach nowhere.
Apply the best of your abilities, engage with maximal positive energy, be passionate about it. If you do these, you will definitely achieve your objectives. However, be warned that invisible forces are working for & against you along this journey. There will be times when nothing will transpire as expected. Despite your all-out efforts, you may not achieve a few of your goals. In such challenging situations, be prepared to let go and move on. This is the most vital learning of achieving life goals. In the end, it is prudent to accept what you have achieved and what you could not. Remember, everyone receives what he deserves. So, develop yourself to attain this state of mind as well.
If I have to suggest one must-have goal for you, then that is achieving financial independence. Even if you do not achieve other goals, I insist, this one you must. In fact, this should be the topmost priority on your list. Accomplishing this goal will enrich your life with joy, happiness, and prosperity. It enables you to achieve many of your tangible goals. It empowers you with unconditional freedom to live your life on your terms. And all you need to accomplish this is discipline and a bit of luck. That’s all. Go for it !!!
